The Segidi community lives mainly in Odisha and Andhra Pradesh. Their primary language is Telugu, the language of Andhra Pradesh.
Most of the Segidi work in agriculture. Some of them own shops. There is a traditional caste council that looks after them and judges their disagreements. Boys are educated more than girls.
Social life among the Segidi is centered on the village, where relationships with family and neighbors are highly valued. Extended families often live in proximity, and cooperation is important for both economic survival and social stability. Respect for elders and traditional authority structures is generally maintained within the community.
The Segidi people practice Hinduism, the ancient religion of India. Hinduism is a catch-all term for the local religions of South Asia, so it is very diverse. At the popular level, Hindus worship and serve the gods of the Hindu pantheon. They visit Hindu temples and offer prayers, food, flowers, and incense to their gods in hopes of gaining protection and benefits. They do not have a personal or familial relationship with their gods like Christians or Jews. There are other Hindus who are much more philosophical, especially among the Brahmins.
Almost all Hindus participate in yearly celebrations like Holi, the festival of colors and the start of spring / Diwali, the festival of lights / Navratri, the celebration of autumn / and Rama Navami, Rama's birthday.
When there are no Christians in one's community, one is not likely to consider ideas coming from outsiders. The Segidi are not being challenged to consider their need for the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.
Pray that Indian believers will regularly intercede for the Segidi and take the blessings of Christ to their communities.
Pray that the Segidi council leaders will begin a movement to Christ in their villages.
